Victron Smart Lithium Troubles
Josh was referred to us because his system was shutting off when he tried to run larger appliances, his monitoring system was not correctly tracking the battery percentage, and his Orion DC-DC charger was not charging his lithium batteries while driving.
When he arrived, we found out immediately what was causing his system to shut off - the undersized battery wire and a loosely attached switch had melted together! After fixing this, he was able to get back on the road for the time being. We scheduled future work as there were several issues with his solar electrical system. The van builder had installed a Victron Smart Lithium Battery Bank with a combination of Victron and Renogy equipment. Although Victron is known for being widely compatible with other brands, this is not the case for their batteries. Victron’s Smart Lithium Batteries are designed to work with a complete Victron system (with a few exceptions). The batteries send signals to the remaining equipment which informs the system whether charging or discharging should be allowed – this signal is usually not picked up by Renogy equipment.
The Solution
We connected Josh’s Lynx Smart BMS to all items in his system, and replaced the Renogy Charge Controller and Inverter with comparable Victron components. Next, we installed a Cerbo-GX and Touch 50. This provides a monitoring hub, where the Lynx Smart BMS reports battery state of charge (now accurately, after a minor setting adjustment), solar production, and load consumption. Finally, we replaced the Orion DC-DC charger, which was under warranty, and even installed a second one, now with automatic cooling fans to keep them pumping out power even as they get warm. The fans are triggered by a Ruuvi wireless temperature sensor in conjunction with the relay on the Cerbo-GX. Adding a second DC-DC charger required larger wiring and a new fuse, of course, which we took care of as well, making sure all wiring underneath of the vehicle was secured using P-clamps and split loom, and avoided exhaust pipes and other hot areas underneath the chassis for peace of mind. Check out the photos of Josh’s system below.
